The Governor’s Office and the California Department of Public Health announced this week that the return to play for outdoor sports may begin taking place. This decision was based on the factor of each county’s Adjusted Case Rate for COVID-19 per 100,000 people. The threshold for outdoor sports to begin competition is 14 cases or lower per 100,000 people. As a point of reference, here are the Adjusted Case Rates per 100,000 people as of Tuesday, February 23, 2021, as well as the changes in those numbers from February 16, 2021 (in parentheses).
- San Luis Obispo County – 9.4 (-6.2 cases since 2/16/21)
- Orange County – 11.9 (-8.8 cases since 2/16/21)
- Los Angeles County – 12.3 (-7.7 cases since 2/16/21)
- San Bernardino County – 15.2 (-9.2 cases since 2/16/21)
- Riverside County – 16.6 (-12.2 cases since 2/16/21)
- Ventura County – 16.9 (-9.3 cases since 2/16/21)
- Santa Barbara County – 16.9 (-10.1 cases since 2/16/21)
- Kern County – 18.5 (-8.3 cases since 2/16/21)
This is great news for our student-athletes and for our athletic program. With that said, we wish that it was easy to just say, “Great, things are back to normal”. There are multiple factors that had to be carefully prayed through. Each of our teams have different COVID protocols to abide by. Transportation has completely changed due to restrictions on the number of passengers allowed in vehicles. Required COVID testing for student-athletes is in place for some sports. Several seasons have been consolidated into one season to try and accommodate the multiple sports that CIF governs. This has caused a log jam and is proving difficult for smaller schools that tend to have multi-sport athletes. Indoor sports are still not allowed, so considering playing indoor sports outside is on the table. There are shortages of officials as many have opted out for COVID reasons. There are also some athletes the have chosen to opt-out due to the current situation. These are only some of the factors that were considered as we made decisions on the sports offered at Southlands Christian for the 2020-21 school year. Below is a summary of our plans for each sport that is offered this year at Southlands Christian.
Southlands Christian Athletics is committed to the safety of our athletes and coaches. SCS has already executed safety measures effectively. Our coaches are exceeding the recommendations set out by CIF by going above and beyond the level of sanitizing safety protocols.
Below is a summary of each sport and the decisions made for the 2020-21 season.
Football: Our football season has officially been canceled. The coaching staff is currently working on an off-season plan that will begin before the year is over. Please look for updated news and information on our off-season/summer program.
Girls Volleyball: The volleyball season is officially canceled. Our team has been cleared for practice and will begin outdoor practices on the SCS Campus on April 12 to prepare for next fall’s season. Practices will be Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00pm. Only those athletes that have completed their athletic clearance for the 2020-21 season will be allowed to participate.
Cheerleading: Although we would love to start cheerleading as soon as possible, the search for a head coach continues. Cheer will continue once we find a qualified head coach. We trust that God’s timing is perfect and He will bring the right coach to our team soon.
Boys Basketball: Per CIF and our state authorities, indoor sports are currently not permitted for practice/play. However, indoor sports have been approved to play outdoors. We are working with our league and non-league opponents to get these games scheduled. Practices will begin on March 1 and will practice every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:30-5:00pm at our Southlands Christian Campus (18550 Farjardo St., Rowland Heights, Ca 91748). Only those athletes that have completed their athletic clearance will be allowed to participate. You may complete your clearance here at www.athleticclearance.com
Girls Basketball: Due to low interest, we will not be able to offer girl’s basketball this year. We are hopeful to bring back our girl’s team next year. We are looking to organize summer camps and will have more information on that in the spring.
Track and Field: Our team started practice last week. We are in the early stages of preparing for our season, so it is NOT too late for you to join! Athletes must complete their athletic clearance at www.athleticclearance.com before attending practice. Practices are Monday-Wednesday at the Southlands Christian School Campus (18550 Farjardo St., Rowland Heights, Ca 91748) and surrounding areas/parks. Athletes will need to abide by all COVID safety procedures to participate, which includes going through a screening process at our security booth.
Baseball: Our team has started practice this week. We would love to grow our roster numbers! Practices are held at the Tzu Chi campus (1920 Brea Canyon Cutoff Rd., Walnut, Ca. 91789) Monday-Friday from 3:30-5:30pm. Athletes must complete their athletic clearance at www.athleticclearance.com before attending practice.
Softball: Our team has started practice and would love to add to our roster. When COVID shut us down last year, our Lady Eagles were ranked 1 in our division. We look to build on what we started last year. We currently practice at the Tzu Chi campus (1920 Brea Canyon Cutoff Rd., Walnut, Ca. 91789). We will be moving back to our SCS campus as soon as the county re-opens our field. Practices are currently Monday-Wednesday and Friday from 4:00-5:45pm
