The cross country team competed in their first league cluster meet yesterday at Webb. Our team, although smaller than most teams that were there competing, were louder and more energetic than all of them.
Coach Jon stated, “That was one of the toughest courses Coach Kayla or I have ever seen…. that being said, they did great!” Our boy’s team came in 5th place out of 7 and only missed 4th place by a few minutes. Freshman, Zayd Salahieh, finished 16th overall and Freshman, Ethan Chung, finished 18th out of 48 runners.
Crystal Cervantes finished 19th for our girls. Alice Xu completed her first race and learned a valuable lesson about getting out too fast.
Instead of feeling defeat or discouragement, the team immediately began discussing how to prepare for the next meet. They suggested that they begin by running more hills in practice. They also asked Coach Kayla and Coach Jon to push them harder and also wanted to know if they could do more “core” workouts on their own. Those thoughts and comments from the student-athletes are a coaches dream! The athletes are pumped and could see that they have great potential as a team! Coach Jon stated, “I was so proud of them! I did not expect a team to ask for more hill training after a course like that. But what I’m most proud of is that our team was definitely the loudest team cheering each other on. It’s something we do in practice and they just did it on their own at the meet. They are really coming together as a team and it was awesome to see.”
